One of the most influential jazz singers in history is Billie Holiday. Her sound and style have impacted generations of singers the world over, including Frank Sinatra, Abbey Lincoln, and Nat "King" Cole. These recordings are from the '30s and early '40s, when she sang with big bands and large groups. Then, her voice was luminous yet rich and full, with hints of the deep, dark and dusky quality that Holiday would acquire in the '50s. On these classic songs of romance and love-gone-wrong, Holiday makes you believe she's lived them. The best musicians of that era accompany her on these recordings: tenor sax giants Lester Young and Ben Webster, pianists Count Basie and Teddy Wilson, and trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison (who was featured on many of Sinatra's '50s recordings). The music swings, and Holiday glides gracefully with it. LOVE SONGS, with its fine recording quality, is a superb collection for fans and casual listeners alike.
