With this album Nick Lowe unveiled his Cowboy Outfit, a crack band with Paul Carrack on keyboards, Bobby Irwin on drums, and old pal Martin Belmont (he and Lowe played together in Brinsley Schwartz) on guitar. They toured regularly and the album has the genuine punchiness of a real ensemble. Some horns and strings are overdubbed, but the album never strays from spotlighting the band interplay. As with all of Lowe's albums, some genuine classics made their first appearance here, including "Half A Boy And Half A Man," "God's Gift To Women," and "(Hey Bigmouth) Stand Up And Say That." At the time this album was made Lowe was married to country singer-songwriter Carlene Carter and a rendition of her "Love Like A Glove" is included (she was recording songs of his around the same time too).
