Banjo player Bela Fleck and bassist Edgar Meyer are genre-benders extraordinaire--both incorporate elements of classical, jazz, bluegrass, and free improvisation into their unique, technically advanced music. On MUSIC FOR TWO, a selection of live performances recorded between 2001 and 2003, the duo displays their remarkable penchant for combining European classical structure with looser, improvisation-based American forms in a tightly knit, sympathetic fashion.
Fleck's skill on the banjo is so formidable, and draws on such a wide range of musical influences, that the instrument is virtually liberated from its conventional associations (namely straight time and bluegrass motifs). Meyer's double bass, whether plucked or bowed, proves the perfect complement to the thin, high-end sound of the banjo. At times studied and delicate, at others free and furious, Meyer and Fleck range across the musical map on their own compositions (many of which were written collaboratively), as well as on treatments of Bach (an arrangement of "The Well-Tempered Clavier"), Eccles, and even Miles Davis. Wit, precision, and top-drawer musicianship abound on this eclectic live set, which includes a bonus DVD featuring footage of the duo in concert.
