Description
Performances by local musicians on Zanzibar are an essential ingredient of most celebrations and the music on this CD provides a variety of styles and a glimpse of the ethnic, religious and gender compositions of this island culture. Of the unique musical styles of Zanzibar taarab, a style of music played for entertainment at weddings and other festive occasions and maulidi, generally a more sober religious performance style celebrating the birth of Prophet Mohammed are both featured here. A treasure from the new collaboration of The British Library National Sound Archive and Topic Records.
